The Modern Resurrection of Arcade Games
Arcade games like Pacman, Space Invaders, and Asteroids are well-known amongst those who lived in the late 70s to the early 90s as they were what first introduced the wider population to the love of electronic gaming. But after the so-called Golden Age of Arcade Gaming in the 1980s and the introduction of affordable gaming consoles it was arcade games which fell by the wayside. However, this wasn’t the end of the arcade game as they would rise again in a new form in the age of the home games console.
Arcade Emulation
The resurrection of the arcade game amongst the generations of the 80s has also been taken into the next generation by the use of the emulator. An emulator is a program found on a computer which can successfully recreate these arcade games in their original forms.
For example, it’s possible to recreate some classic handheld arcade games on the computer where they can be downloaded and played just like a modern computer game. This is a particular favourite amongst groups of people who don’t relish the idea of relying on online websites to play their favourite arcade games.
Why is this Happening?
There are so many ways to play these old arcade games from the past, but why are there so many ways to play all of these games? The answer is that there is obviously a great deal of demand for all of these games; and not just collectors who are certainly in the minority.
Nostalgia is certainly the main reason for this increase in demand because so many people long to experience those great feelings from their youth where they used to play those arcade games in their original form. This is especially true of games like Space Invaders (released 1978) which actually caused a national shortage of 100 yen coins in Japan because people were so obsessed with that game.
But it’s not just nostalgia which is creating demand for these games. The fact is that games like Super Mario and Asteroids had such original ideas that they have remained timeless and still remain popular today. Arcade games are famous for the fact that they have short, fast-paced levels of increasing difficulty. And this means they can be played quickly without having to waste time setting everything up. This is contrary to many modern games which are not really worth playing unless the gamer has at least an hour to spare.
The fact is that nostalgic people and impatient gamers alike are still enthralled by the appeal of these quick and fast pieces of gaming magic, and this is why arcade games still have a prominent place in gaming even in this age of high-tech gaming action.
